During the first lockdown certain things became cliches. The pasta and toilet roll stock-piling came first. Then the 'patience' hobbies such as knitting, home baking (especially sourdough) and jigsaws. I thought about submitting each of these but Sourdough is more practical than WhatsApp and resonates better. The connotations of bread are clear - sustenance, staff of life. However the patience required to create a sourdough starter and nurture it (it usually takes about 7 days) and to maintain it (it needs maintenance every 3 days) mirrors the patience we need to survive through lockdown. I also hope that seeing a loaf of bread might make people smile - some in recognition.
