I am a 4th year student studying Contemporary Applied Art in MTU Crawford College of Art & Design. This piece is part of a larger body of work for my final year. At this very difficult time, I wanted to look at what we do as individuals to feel protected while at the same time feeling very vulnerable. Textiles is a big part of our lives regardless of who we are or where we have come from, the feel of a soft blanket wrapped around us, the physical touch of textiles on the skin. I wanted to explore this emotional attachment to textiles and objects, and the vulnerability we feel at different stages in our lives. Exploring objects and rituals we surround ourselves with to bring comfort. Intensive machine stitch, textile painting and screen printing on fabric. Layering personal stories of memory, maternity, loss, joy, and identity, with symbols, into a tapestry / quilt like fashion.
