This work was one of many re-edited during lock downSo close & yet was originally a performance, including projection and experimental harness work, made for the Repeal the 8th campaign. The process of developing the work began with making a film with 5 very specific moving images in mind. These images acted as chapters, which structured the choreography of the performance. Their sequence formed a poetic narrative contemplating the journey from unwanted conception to an isolated experience of travelling for abortion. The opening image could represent the isolated, clinical space of an institution heightened by composed sound of a preacher, radio interference and a recorded message for an unavailable service. The second image of a burning institution could represent passion, crisis and the patriarch with accompanying song that intensifies a sense of irony and pathos. The third image of a giant tube of transparent red liquid could represent a lonely passage, a fallopian tube or a phallus with accompanying sound of a male navigator’s voice that is well meaning but unclear. The fourth image of demolition could represent a brutal procedure with subtitles indicating a loss of familial communication. The final image of a red-lit silhouette descending through darkness with live sound of exacerbated breath could represent a vulnerable return.
