During lockdown I began watching Sky Portrait Artist of the Week via live stream video on Sundays, it was very much something to look forward to during challenging times! Submitting weekly to this competition brought my focus back to painting after many years working with Darkroom Photography, Textiles, and other media. Returning to painting enlivened my affinity with colour and sparked a new direction in my practice, portraiture. This Impressionistic painting of Stephen Maderson explores the visual qualities of digital LCD screens, capturing the rippling quality of pixels and visual noise from the remote video feed. I produce these effects by layering vibrant colours, laying contrasting colours along side each other and applying or scrapping the paint away in parallel lines. Washes of colour straight from the tube combined with more muted washes of colour serve well for a blurred or pixelated look.
